March 2010
INTRODUCTION

Like so many others, I've been caught up in "March Madness", otherwise known as the NCAA Basketball Tournament, and like so many others, including the President of the United States, my bracket, i.e., my set of predictions on which teams will go to the Final Four, was mostly wrong. Oh well. For me, the real attraction of this tournament is not so much who gets to the top, but the sheer heart of these student athletes, the vast majority of whom will never play in the NBA. And, with the exception of a few medalists at the recent Vancouver Olympics, not too many of the skiers, skaters, etc., who have spent their lives learning extremely difficult skills, will ever be in the media limelight again. But they all do it anyway. I see this same unsung dedication every day at our store as young pianists come in to try out our "gear". They will sit down at one of our Steinway Concert Grands and play the most challenging pieces just for the sheer joy of accomplishment. Let me repeat that: just for the sheer joy of accomplishment. Recently, Ms. Fan-Ya Lin, a student at Weber State University, "carried home the gold" for her school, community, and family, having won the the top prize at prestigious Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Tournament, in New Mexico (see the article). It is doubtful that her achievement will land her picture on a Wheaties box (we're including it here), never-the-less, this young virtuoso has done something that is every bit as significant as a national championship or an Olympic medal. I salute her achievement and the achievements of all current and future artist-athletes. Work hard at whatever you do, and don't forget to have fun.

Sincerely,

Skip Daynes
