SUMMER SHEET MUSIC SELECTIONS
Staff Favorites for Intermediates and Youngsters
By Jared Jaccard
Here at Daynes Music we are excited about the new Schirmer Performance Editions that are being published by Hal Leonard. In this month's issue of the Melodeon we'd like to highlight the release of their new J.S. Bach: First Lessons in Bach, consisting of 28 pieces and a cd recording for just $12.99! Although relatively brief in duration, these beautiful miniatures are just as obviously the work of a supreme master as are Bach's larger compositions. The selection is edited by Christos Tsitsaros who is also the pianist featured on the CD. As with all releases in this series, the book comes with detailed notes designed to help the student approach these masterworks in the thoughtful, informed manner which this music deserves. The music is printed on high quality, off-white paper which is easy on the eyes.
The Polish composer Alexandre Tansman (1897-1986) shared a similar fate to (and was influenced by) his compatriot, Frederic Chopin. Both were born in Poland but evenutally emigrated to France, settling in Paris. Both composed music that had its roots in Polish soil but with a decidedly French flair. Tansman also wrote much for piano that varies in style from neoclassicism to jazz. In this month's Melodeon we are featuring the release of his Ten Diversions, a collection of attractive pieces for the young, intermediate pianist.
Astor Piazzolla, the Argentine master of Tango Nuevo, is famous for his innovations in the genre of this passionate latin dance form. For the first time in print in an arrangement for intermediate piano we have fifteen tangos and other pieces sure to delight. This new collection is entitled El Viaje, taken from the title of one of the pieces included in the book. Order your copy today!
Our final selection is The Best of Joaquin Turina, a collection of twenty-three pieces by the nationalistic Spanish composer. Turina's music in informed by Impressionism thanks to his time spent in France, and elements of Andalusian dance rhythms. His music is rich with colorful harmonies and effective, idiomatic writing for the piano.
