| Note: |
Every so often, we come across a piano that reminds us of what it must be like to discover an antique Rolls Royce in perfect running order hidden away in an old garage somewhere. And so it is with this remarkable 1898 Steinway "A". Despite it's age and a few scratches (this piano would be a re-finisher's dream-come-true), it plays beautifully, like a modern Steinway: bright trebles, rich mid-ranges, and deep basses. Notice the encasement in the picture above: there is no seam. The mahogany wraps continually all the way around the piano, i.e., from one strip of wood; this simply does not happen anymore -- hasn't for decades and decades. The hand-carved legs and lyre are richly detailed, much like today's limited edition Steinways, selling for $120,000, and up. If you desire a lovely piano that is every bit a Steinway, and you are the type of person who would be willing to spend a few extra thousand dollars to restore it, truly, here is a one-of-a-kind heirloom, like no other Steinway, anywhere, at a bargain price.
